REX 2002 French Tudor Renovation Library BeforeSituated on a three acre estate sat an 8,000 square foot 1936 French Tudor Manor. The park-like setting combined with the timeless elegance of the home’s style excited the home’s new owners. Though showing its age, the home offered that visual appeal that comes with aging well. If the setting and exterior was a thing of beauty, the homes interior certainly was not. Upon entering what should have been the polished living spaces of this magnificent place, the owners were greeted with outdated finishes, unmatched styling and archaic electrical and mechanical systems.FireplaceWhen it came to reconciling the issues of style and function, there was much thought given to built-in cabinetry and woodwork. The lifeless library with its sagging shelves and dim lighting was no showcase for the owners’ book and art collection. The new handcrafted cabinetry, Bookshowever, brought back the handsome ambiance that had been lost. Custom detailing, including traditional inset doors, pilaster moldings and hand-painted finishes underscored the newfound elegance. The transformation was remarkable from every angle.DenThe existing den, though small, lacked the charm and draw for which it was intended. The owners rethought its usage, and arrived at theDesk idea of a family-style home office. The cherry desk and wrap-around marmoleum counter offered a comfortable workstation for up to three people. Book shelf cabinetry was inset into the walls, preserving as much workable space as possible. FireplaceThe re-vitalization of the living room occurred as the custom mantel and stone facade were fit to the old fireplace. While the main living areas were getting their face-lifts, the downstairs basement presented its own set of difficulties. The owner’s private wine collection sat in old shelves and boxes in one of the dingy basement rooms. While the wine room cabinetry was being constructed, the room was being retrofitted for a new climate-control system. With the new components in place, the cellar offered a private sanctuary for wine tasting. Wine CellarWine Cellar
