REX 2004 Innovation in Design Having a good eye for style and a collection of tasteful furnishings is a great thing. Living in a house that detracts from your style and taste is not. The owners of this home found that their casual, old-world tastes no longer fit with the uninspiring environment of their Kent home. It was not that they disliked their home, but its nondescript architecture failed to keep pace with their style. For the couple and their two daughters, sports, friends and get-togethers were important parts of life. At the center of these activities was the kitchen. Though well-used, it lacked the spaciousness and warmth the owners had in mind. Instead, the outdated oak cabinets and tile counters seemed more suited for a utility room than a kitchen. The island lacked the capacity for comfortable dining, and the overall cooking area felt too cramped. The owners formulated a plan to remodel their kitchen into the inviting gathering place for which it was intended. The plan called for moving out the exterior walls in order to enlarge the kitchen footprint and eliminate the cramped feeling. Then, windows and window skylights would be added for warm outdoor lighting. 21Special attention was given to the details and layout of the new cabinetry. We worked closely with the owners to achieve the perfect combination of wood, color tones and finish. The result was a warm cherry kitchen that reflected the owners’ tasted in every detail. 4The island was designed to function as the kitchen’s gathering place. It now offered ample room for casual dining, a large counter surface, and a relaxing place to share a glass of wine.3Because the kitchen was to serve as a hub of family activity, a writing desk was incorporated into the space beside the island. Menu planning, scheduling, and correspondence could all be handled from this convenient location. All completed, the kitchen is a true reflection of the family’s lifestyle. Now it feels like home.
